Skin Protection
Did you know? The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet. All the more reason to pay attention to what we have to say about skin protection.
This week’s unseasonably weather is perfect timing for us to chat about sun protection. Many Wisconsinites will be wanting to peel back layers to stay cool as temps climb into the high eighties and lower nineties. (And just think, those are outdoor temps. Imagine the sweltering temperatures inside enclosed barns and shelters. Coupled with the humidity, farmers are at a risk for heat-related illness. Here are some tips of Handling Heat & Humidity)
But, removing clothing layers can expose your skin to direct sun rays, which can damage your skin over time. So, what should you do?
3 Tips for the Most Complete Sun Protection
- Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.
- Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. (<–That’s why the Safety & Health Kit we’re giving away this week—National Farm Safety & Health Week—includes a wide-brimmed hat!)
- Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun’s rays are strongest. (We understand this isn’t completely realistic for farmers. If you must be outside, be sure to follow Tips 1 and 2 to get the most protection possible.)
